What is Division?

Hello! Today I want to tell you about division. It’s actually very interesting!
When you do division, you divide numbers. You can actually use multiplication to help you. Here’s an example: You have 10 apples and 5 friends. You want to give each friend some apples. So you DIVIDE the apples between your friends. This is where you can use multiplication.
You can think to yourself, “5 x what equals 10 ?” So then you know 5 x 2 = 10. So each person get 2 apples.

There are different ways of writing the division symbol. The / is one of them. Now to understand how to do this a little better, let’s do a practice problem. Amelia has 21 erasers. she split them into 3 groups. How many pencils are in each group? So now we can do multiplication. Since there are 3 groups, you should think, 3 x ? = 21. Good! 3 x 7 = 21. So now you know that there are 7 pencils in each group. Now that you understand, let’s get to the real problems.
